Ostrich Production

Abstract

Ed. Note: Although jew readers
likely keep ostriches, the husbandry
methods described herein are excellent
and very applicable to most
types of birds, with some modifications.
This article provides a
step-by-step approach to sound
management of any bird flock.
Though all of us are familiar with
ostriches in zoos, commercial ostrich
farms have been in the United States
for many years, especially when their
feathers were popular.
Since the recent restriction of
ostrich importation from south
Africa, the demand for ostriches is
very high, resulting in high prices for
all ages of birds.
Successful large-scale production
depends on implementing scientifically
proven practices in management
and husbandry, breeding, brooding
and rearing, nutrition, health maintenance
and, above all, hatchery
management and incubation. Maximum
utilization of quality forage will
likely be necessary to make production
economically feasible.
