Calif. Food & Agriculture Moves to Ban Psittacines

Abstract

A.F .A. has been advised, through a correspondent
in Sacramento, that the State Department of Food and
Agriculture is drafting a proposal to prohibit the
importation and possession, in California, of the
Indian Ringneck Parakeet, Nan day Conure, and Canary
Wing Bee Bee because of evidence of these birds
breeding in the wild, within the State. Two additional
Psittacine species, Double Yellow Headed Amazon,
and the Red Headed Amazon have been sighted in the
wild. Although no evidence of their breeding is available,
they also may be banned. After the proposal has
been finalized, it will be submitted to the Wild Life
Importation Advisory Committee for recommendation
or rejection. The A.F.A., through it's representative
on this committee, will gather scientific evidence in
the support of countering this proposal, to protect
avicultural interests.
