Journal History

The members of the JOVMC Editorial Board literally embody "The Performing Scholar": all are engaged individually and collectively as teachers, researchers, pedagogues, and performers in the worlds of vernacular musics and dance--expressive arts that are learned, taught, and passed-on by ear and in the memory. Stacey Jocoy is a specialist in Renaissance and Baroque music, particularly ballad research, and performs in early, Polynesian, and East Asian styles. Roger Landes [link to TTU bio page] is a specialist in Near Eastern and North European instrumental music traditions, among others, and serves as Professor of Practice at Texas Tech University. He directs the TTU Balkan Ensemble [linked] Angela Mariani [link] holds a DMA in Early Music Collegium Direction and specializes in medieval music, folk and rock music, and music as contemplative practice. She directs the TTU Early Music Ensemble [link]. Lauryn Salazar [link] holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology and specializes in Latin-American musics of the Southwest and Central America, also performing in Baroque and Classical keyboard styles. She directs the TTU Mariachi Ensemble and summer camp. Christopher J Smith [link] is Professor and Chair of Musicology and director of the Vernacular Music Center at TTU. He directs the TTU Celtic Ensemble and the "symphonic folk" ensemble The Elegant Savages Orchestra [link]. All Board members, in addition to their individual activities as teachers, researchers, and performers, also collaborate extensively, both with one another and with a network of compatible creative and pedagogical partners around the nation.
