Abstract

Using the writings of a group of eleventh-grade African-American youths in a pre-college program, we illustrate what happens when youth are afforded opportunities to declare “their truth.” Facilitating such opportunities creates safe spaces to better hear often silenced and marginalized voices and provides chances to affirm and legitimize their experiences.
