The Counterpublic Writing Experience of Houston Latinos University Students

Though much work has been done on African Americans in the FYW course and on the complicated subject of ESL, here I address the importance of recognizing and validating the rhetoric and heritage of the culture we call, variously, Hispanic, Latino, and Chicano. I will note how our textbooks, classrooms, and our curriculum often do not reflect the rich Latino cultures and in fact may function as an academic colonization of Houston’s Latino community. This is a local concern with national implications.
