Abstract

In Germany major harbours are located in the river estu-aries. Because of the growth of container ships and the corresponding draft of these ships, the depth of the chan-nels in the estuaries had to be increased several times. This results in consequences for nature and agriculture. One of these effects might be that the brackish water zone is moving upstream and the surrounding farmers can't provide fresh water to their animals or plants any more. The study presented on the poster will show the effects on salinity in the Weser estuary after the channel deepening in 1998-2000 by using artificial neural networks.
