Abstract

Measurements made during one day of the 1986 SUPERDUCK experimental Duck, North Carolina are used in order to investigate the model of Bowen & Holman (1989). This model explains low-frequency oscillations in the longshore current, which were observed during that experiment, in terms of a shear instability in that flow. The model is extended to include dissipation (in the form of bottom friction), and it is found that there is good agreement between it and observation.
