Abstract

A beach nourishment project was carried out at Atlantic City, NJ during the summer of 1986. One million cubic yards of sand was dredged from adjacent Absecon Inlet and placed over a 9000 foot long section of the beach. The authors monitored the fill for a period of eighteen months, including two winters, after placement of the fill. This paper briefly summarizes the fill project and monitoring program. Key results of the monitoring program are presented and compared with results of the monitoring program for previous nourishment projects at the site in 1963 and 1970. Differences in the behavior of the 1986 fill vis-a-vis the 1963 and 1970 fills are discussed and possible reasons for these differences are given.
